Depression can be a very serious condition and it is often misunderstood. Women are for more likely to develop depression than men. Understanding the symptoms of depression in women is often the key to properly treating this affliction.
There are many factors that can cause depression in women. These can include hormonal imbalances during the menstrual cycle, postpartum depression or “baby blues”, and menopause. Other causes include stress, poverty, a death of a loved one, physical or sexual abuse, and lack of intimacy. Whatever the cause the symptoms are very real and need to be addressed.
Some of the signs of depression are sadness, hopelessness, a feeling of overwhelming guilt, and feeling worthless. If you don’t take steps to remove it or at least reduce its effects, it can last a very long time if left untreated. You may experience one or more of these symptoms. Insomnia is often associated with depression. Others may want to sleep all the time. It is harder to stay focused when you are getting too much sleep or not enough sleep. Everyone is different and each person will deal with depression in their own way.
Other signs of depression are changes in appetite, weight loss or gain, lack of energy, headaches and fatigue. Some people tend to eat everything in sight, while others barely eat at all. Many find it impossible to get motivated to do anything. You no longer enjoy the things that you once loved to do and often tend to stay at home.
Depression can be mild, moderate, or severe. If you are having thoughts of suicide; you should consult your physician immediately. Depression can be treated with much success. Understanding why you feel the way that you do and that you are not alone are the first steps to your recovery. Your doctor can discuss many treatment options with you and get you on the road to recovery.
