Many men often go undiagnosed when they are suffering from depression because most people associate this disease with women. Oftentimes, men are too proud to admit to feeling depressed. But in reality, millions of men suffer from this ailment. Recognizing symptoms of depression in men is imperative. It is important that they seek out professional help.

Men tend to feel inferior if they admit to experiencing depression. They feel that they must put up a “strong” front. They mainly focus only on the physical aspect of depression rather than the emotional. After all, it’s not “manly” do be depressed, so why admit to this apparent flaw?

Men experience different symptoms than women and it seems to be a bit harder to diagnose for them. Common signs are lowered self esteem, tiredness, and bouts of anger. Anger can be the most aggravating because it is often misplaced.

Low sex drive is a common complaint in men who suffer from depression. This leads to feelings of inadequacy and failure. The truth is that it is a medical condition and can be treated successfully. The key is honesty with your physician.

Depression in men can cause them to keep their true feelings hidden. They often will be irritable and strike out at loved ones. They often become aggressive and may turn to drugs and alcohol. This makes the situation much worse.

The suicide rate is much higher in men than in women. In fact, they are actually four times more likely to commit suicide. This is why it is imperative to recognize depression and be treated by a physician. Untreated depression can lead to suicide and must be treated.

Depression is a medical condition that needs to be treated. It is not a sign of weakness and should not be considered a woman’s disease. It affects men and women alike, the only major difference being the outward signs.
