Bi-Polar disorder is another moniker for manic depression. This is associated with unusual and quick switches from a good mood to a sour mood, when someone says “wow, they’re bi-polar”. Depression has many forms. This is one of them. Manic depression isn’t just having negative feelings over a negative event. Manic depression is a much more serious condition. The diagnosis of being Bi-Polar is just another stage of the disease of depression. In America millions of people each year are told they are afflicted with manic depression. Typically, some type of depression yearly affects around 17 million Americans.
Two thirds of those people will never seek medical attention or even a diagnosis. If you do not look for help than it is very hard to find a cure. Many Americans are hesitant to confront a disease that is categorized as a mental illness. The negative image of someone who is “nuts” is just too much for them. Brain diseases are generally quite complex. The stigma of a diagnosis is a hard pill to swallow. But having this disease isn’t a sign of personal weakness. It doesn’t mean you’re insane. It means you have an illness like any other. It can be treated. First it has to be identified.
The causes of all forms of depression are still being examined in the medical profession. Depression is caused by a wide range of issues. It’s well known that consideration must be given to chemical factors, a person’s surroundings, and even their genes. We know that it seems to be caused by a chemical imbalance on the brain. Stress is another major factor in depression. Every day we confront events in life that cause us stress. Issues at school, with loved ones, or just the daily grind can cause it. Depression knows no bounds. It can affect the rich and the poor. It doesn’t care about race. No racial group is less likely to contract this disease.
The symptoms for all forms of depression are quite similar. These include mood swings from happy to sad and serious personality switches. Depression can result in insomnia. If you have no hope, feel helpless or desperate, that could be depression. When everyday life becomes a chore, that’s depression. But people with depression have a light at the end of the tunnel. You can find help. There are medicines both prescribed and natural that can offer a cure. There are also medical professionals that can help your illness through ‘talk therapy’”. Support groups can also be helpful for those with manic depression. Look for assistance first.
