The primary cause of sleep paralysis is that of not being fully awake when the attacks happen. The attacks occur when dreaming you are suddenly woken from your sleep and your brain responds much faster than your body. You then experience the sensation that the dream you were having is real. In trying to respond to it you find that you cannot even move a single muscle.
The reason for this is that the transition from being asleep to full consciousness is meant to be gradual and not sudden. If something suddenly wakes you up whilst you are having a dream then paralysis is likely to set in. Being paralyzed during sleep is actually meant to be a protective measure for you. The body is trying to prevent you from reacting to something that is not there.
Panic and fear usually set in when one tries to scream and the sound does not even come out. What disturbs me the most though is that these so called hallucinations seem so real at the time they occur. With so many repeated occurrences happening to me I couldn’t stand it any longer and decided to research.
I have encountered many suggested solutions and techniques to this problem. Some methods are as simple as avoidance techniques of known causes, to meditation and yoga. If you find that you are paralyzed during sleep help is available. You can say goodbye to sleepless nights.
