It took more than a few years but Emily finally decided that she had enough with her husband’s abusive drinking. She was weary from seeing Barry come home early in the morning from drinking rather than spending time with her and the kids. She was also exhausted from the third DUI Barry recently received. Moreover she was worn-out from making justifications for her husband when he couldn’t make it to the office due to his problems with drinking. Not only this but she was concerned and depressed about the fact that their relationship was crumbling due to Barry’s abusive and careless drinking. And finally she was exhausted from the hazardous financial mess into which he had placed his family because of his careless drinking behavior.
When Excessive Drinking Inspires a Person to do Something Affirmative About an Individual’s Drinking Problem
One Tuesday evening when Emily was pondering what she could do about her husband’s negative drinking, she got to the point that she simply had to do something positive to cut into the destructive cycle of Barry’s excessive and abusive drinking behavior.
So she looked online under “alcohol rehab” and located more than a few rehabilitation facilities that were all located less than twenty miles away from where she and Barry lived.
Since she didn’t know anything about these rehab centers, she finally determined that she needed to call some of them and ask a few questions. When she called each rehab facility she introduced herself and articulated that her spouse was engaging in careless and abusive drinking behavior. She also stated that her husband had a top-rate health insurance program at his place of employment and that inpatient or outpatient alcoholism rehabilitation would be covered if a health care professional in the company health network called for the rehabilitation.
At one rehab center, Emily was astonished that she was able to speak directly with a doctor who suggested that she come to the rehab center to discuss her husband’s abusive and unhealthy drinking behavior in greater detail.
Emily Talks to a Healthcare Practitioner About Her Husband’s Hazardous and Abusive Drinking
When Emily got to the treatment center, she filled out some forms and then after approximately ten or fifteen minutes got to see a therapist.
After listening to Emily go over her husband’s unhealthy and excessive drinking, the psychologist in a compassionate but firm way told Emily how she more likely than not played a role in her husband’s negative drinking through the years by rationalizing his drinking rather than allowing him to experience the outcomes of his abusive and unhealthy drinking behavior.
Emily Learns That She Has Been Enabling Her Husband’s Abusive and Hazardous Drinking
In short, the healthcare professional stated to Emily that she may have been unintentionally enabling Barry’s careless drinking behavior. The healthcare professional also highlighted the fact that although Emily would not be able to control Barry’s actions, with the encouragement and support of the treatment team at the treatment facility she would not only be able to learn how to stop contributing to Barry’s careless drinking but she could also learn how to motivate him to make an appointment at the treatment clinic so that he could go over his abusive and careless drinking behavior with a therapist.
Fortunately after Emily explained this to her husband, and he saw that she was serious, Barry told her that he had been extremely disturbed by his careless and hazardous drinking behavior and that he was very comforted to know that Emily wanted to do something affirmative about his abusive and hazardous drinking behavior. As a result, he made an appointment to see a healthcare professional at the local alcohol rehab facility.
Barry Agrees to See a Healthcare Practitioner About His Excessive and Irresponsible Drinking
While simply calling a rehabilitation clinic does not ensure that an individual’s unhealthy and excessive drinking behavior will become less problematic or that one’s warning signs of alcoholism or the alcohol abuse signs one manifests will simply go away, scheduling an appointment is plainly a requisite step in the treatment process. And since Barry was serious about getting counseling for his harmful drinking, the probability for a successful recovery was significantly increased.
