Samuel was a thirty-one-year-old bookkeeper who was tired of feeling depressed on a daily basis and tired of his abusive and excessive drinking behavior. In a word, he was sick of feeling tired every morning, he was angry with himself for spending his hard-earned money on a valueless habit, he was tired of going through failed relationship after failed relationship because of his irresponsible drinking, he missed his old drive for doing various things he enjoyed, and he hated the hangovers he went through on a regular basis.
Moreover he was fed up with paying for alcohol-related lawyer fees, he hated the fact that he had to go to court for his second DWI, he was disgusted with how out-of-shape he was, he was irritated with the many times he failed an alcohol test at work, and he was bored with his drinking buddies.
On top of the identifiable alcohol-related health problems he was going through, almost certainly the worst part of his drinking regimen was the undependable and fraudulent individual he had turned into. In his heart of hearts he knew that he had been dishonest about his drinking behavior to his relatives, family, and friends and he also knew he had been dishonest with himself about the “positive” effects of drinking. What is more, he rationalized gulping four or five drinks before going to social events and he also rationalized needing two or three drinks the first thing in the morning so that he could manage the “pressures” at his job.
His Depression and His Abusive and Excessive Drinking Lead to Major Life Changes
It was clear that Samuel was sick of putting up with the negative outcomes of his depression and his hazardous and careless drinking and eventually made up his mind that something important had to change in his life. So he decided that he would quit drinking, develop a new circle of friends, get professional counseling, involve himself in some worthwhile hobbies, start focusing on becoming a more healthy person, and start exercising.
Stated simply, Samuel got to a special time in his life during which he saw that he hit rock bottom and was now ready to start the slow road that leads to health.
One of the ways that Samuel put his “plan” info operation was by asking for a transfer at his workplace. When his request was approved, he moved 600 miles away to a new city. If nothing else, this without a doubt made making new friends and pals and disconnecting himself from his old friends and buddies much simpler. Then he went to see a healthcare practitioner in his new city and made an appointment for a comprehensive physical exam.
Samuel Meets With a Healthcare Professional About His Hazardous and Irresponsible Drinking and His Depression
After meeting with the healthcare professional and taking a number of laboratory tests, it was decided that Samuel had made the transition from alcohol abuse to dependency on alcohol and therefore was in need of alcohol therapy and alcohol detoxification. At this time, the doctor made it a point to go over the different signs of alcoholism, the symptoms of alcoholism, and information about long term effects of alcohol with Samuel.
The doctor then told Samuel that it was concluded that he was clinically depressed and in need of therapy for this medical condition.
Samuel Decides to Build Up His Body by Going to the Gym, Living an Alcohol-Free Lifestyle, Taking Vitamins, Eating Nutritious Foods, and Drinking Spring Water
Due to his willingness to follow through with the rehabilitation program, after six weeks of residential treatment, Samuel was ready to start rehab on an outpatient basis. At this point, he started working at his new job and over the weeks began fortifying his body by exercising, drinking filtered water, eating healthy foods, living an alcohol-free way of life, and taking vitamins and minerals.
Samuel also attended to his spiritual yearnings by joining the local Seventh-Day Adventist church and going to the weekly services.
After nearly three weeks of outpatient rehabilitation during which time he never experienced an alcohol relapse, Samuel stopped going to alcohol therapy and instead started going four times every week to local AA meetings. Attending these meetings helped Samuel maintain his alcohol-free lifestyle, they gave him the support he required, and they served as a continual reminder of the destructive consequences that are associated with excessive and hazardous drinking.
After going to AA meetings nearly nine months Samuel felt that he was ready for a relationship and so he started dating Vicki, a young lady he met at church. It simply astonished Samuel how much more prepared he was for a dating relationship now that he had his careless and hazardous drinking under control. In actual fact it also astonished Samuel how much better life was now that he wasn’t under the control of his excessive and unhealthy drinking. Life was now positive and loaded with potential that he could have never hoped for or accomplished when he was involved in abusive drinking less than a year ago.
A Success Story That is a Statement of the Relevance of Alcohol Treatment and the Power of Positive Thinking
Samuel’s success story is a verification of the value of alcohol rehab and the power of positive change. As Samuel thought about his newfound positive self image and motivation for involving himself in healthy, worthwhile activities, he was actually appreciative that he decided to do something productive about his careless drinking instead of giving into his depression and into the lure of his alcohol addiction. The result: he has more energy now compared with any time in his adult life, he is in command of his life rather than letting himself suffer under the control of his alcohol addiction, he is involved in a wholesome relationship, his life now has a positive direction, and he likes his new job responsibilities.
